Our Lady’s Home Chapel reopens

24 August 2024. The chapel at Our Lady’s Home, Coogee, re-opens after necessary maintenance and restoration works. Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus Of Sydney, Most Rev. Terry Brady, and Bishop Emeritus of Broken Bay, Most Rev. David Walker concelebrates a Mass of Thanksgiving attended by a small congregation. Visitors include Diocesan postulator, Rev. Fr. Anthony Robbie; Rev. Fr. Thoi Tran, Parish Priest of Coogee; Rev. Fr. Phil Hicks, former Parish Priest of Coogee; Rev. Fr. Peter Hearn, Parish Priest of Kensington; and Rev. Fr. John Knight, Parish Priest of Malabar and Sisters of Charity Congregational Leader, Sr Laureen Dixon rsc. Our Lady’s Nurses for the Poor Sisters Gabriel Bast, Patricia Malone and Kerry Macdermott also welcomed the project’s builder, Trent Rogers, and his father, Peter (who also undertook building works for Our Lady’s Nurses for the Poor before his retirement); and a small number of staff, supporters and friends. The chapel was originally Eileen’s bedroom, where the foundation community of Our Lady’s Nurses for the Poor witnessed an apparition of Our Lady in 1916. The chapel was consecrated on 23 August 1932. In his homily, Archbishop Michael Sheehan, said, “I am happy indeed to have the privilege of offering the first Holy Mass in your chapel and of leaving the Blessed Sacrament with you. I know that while Our Lord is here with you, He will never be lonely.” Eileen’s remains were transferred to the chapel in 1936. At the time, her body was claimed to be incorrupt. Please contact Our Lady’s Nurses for the Poor if you would like to visit our chapel.
