2 December 1970. His Eminence Norman Cardinal Gilroy presents Our Lady’s Nurses for the Poor co-founder, Rev. Father Edward (Ted) McGrath msc, to His Holiness Pope Paul VI, during the papal visit to Australia. In an ironic twist, it is almost 56 years to the day since Father McGrath was expelled from the Society of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart for disobedience. Father McGrath, who is now 89 years old, returns to Our Lady’s Home, Coogee, and tells the sisters that the Holy Father had thanked him for the work he had done for the Church. Father McGrath believes Our Lady’s Nurses for the Poor has finally received the full blessing of the church. Remarkably, the conversation between Pope Paul VI and Father McGrath was in French.
