Our Lady's Nurses
For the poor
1913 - 2013

Two sisters of Our Lady’s Nurses for the Poor ‘on the district’.

FOR THE POOR AND THE POOR ONLY

For 100 years, our Lady’s Nurses for the Poor – fondly known as the ‘Brown Nurses’ – has performed a unique ministry of healthcare, advocacy and friendship for the poor and disadvantaged.

We provide a gentle and loving presence in the local government areas of Sydney and Randwick, New Farm in Brisbane, Merewether in Newcastle and Minto/Macquarie Fields in the Macarthur region.

We extend practical care to all who seek help, without discrimination and in the spirit of the Good Samaritan of the Gospel.

This ministry is exercised by:

• Caring:

home nursing, visiting, hospitality and being a comforting presence

• Friendship:

supporting families and individuals experiencing hardship, broken relationships, bereavement or isolation

• Advocacy:

standing with those unable to oppose unjust structures and systems

• Listening:

responding to the needs of the poor who require specific skills and diversity of expression
